Influenced by the love story between Marc Chagall and his wife and muse, Bella Rosenfeld and the whimsical paintings he did of himself and Bella. Also inspired by folk art, dreams, the cosy feeling of familiarity and love, along with so much more.

The Love Story of Marc Chagall and Bella Rosenfeld

This piece was heavily inspired by the amazing yet tragic love story between Marc Chagall and his wife Bella Rosenfeld. I first found out about Bella of course through Chagall’s paintings, my favourites being Chagall’s iconic canvas’s of them both floating, very whimsical and dreamlike through the sky. My favourite painting being ‘Over the Town’. 

In 1911 Chagall moved to Paris to go to art school, however didn’t speak the language and found it difficult. He must’ve been pretty homesick and love sick as he went back to Vitebsk for Bella. After convincing her parents, they got married and Bella became Chagall’s life long muse. 

It is suggested that the many paintings of them floating or flying is Chagall’s way of saying their love is stronger than gravity.

The couple later escaped the war, however very sadly Bella died of illness. Even sadder, from everywhere I have read it seemed to just be tonsillitis which of course could now be cured so easily. 

I wanted to keep it short on here but there is much more to their relationship and Chagall’s life so I strongly encourage reading more as its fascinating.
